Teach your Child to Read

There will be an enclosed playground where your children can play while you are doing the course.. we are trying to work on getting some young adults to help supervise children so you can attend.

Teach Your Child To Read:  If you are a parent with a young pre-reader, or if you have an older student who is struggling, then this is the course you need! Grace Harrison is a local homeschool mom and literacy interventionist specialising in learn-to-read skills and remediation for students with dyslexia and other reading delays. She believes parents can be the best teachers, but that it's really hard to access the information that will make a difference for your child.  This is a 6 hour course divided into three, 2-hour lessons.

Session 1 will teach you about how reading happens in the brain, how reading has been traditionally taught, what the science says about learning to read, and the best methods for reading introduction. We will touch on balanced literacy, the three-cueing system, Orton Gillingham, and speech-to-print methodologies.

Session 2 will teach you about how understanding sounds in words affects language development, how to introduce new letters and sounds, and how to teach complex spellings. This is the nitty-gritty, how-to session for reading and spelling instruction.

Session 3 will teach you about building longer words, syllables, prefixes and suffixes word origins, and the meaning behind word parts.  This course will include worksheets for you and lots of hands-on practice. It will also include blank copies of the worksheets you complete so you can use them with your child, a scope and sequence for concept introduction, and a simple placement test to determine what your child is missing.
