3:30pm - 4:15pm: West Coast Centre for Learning’s CEO Kristi Rigg presents:
Sound=Word=Meaning=Reading – the path to reading success, is paved with individual stones of phonemic awareness!
We know every word is essentially “a sequence of phonemes”, or individual sounds. Learn how Parents can stimulate future reading success early, by interacting in key activities to stimulate critical phonemic awareness in young children. West Coast Centre for Learning’s CEO Kristi Rigg explains what “PHONEMIC AWARENESS” is, and why it is so crucial to early reading development.
West Coast Centre for Learning is located in the Health Technology Innovation District of Surrey’s Innovation Boulevard, and an active supporter of Kids Brain Health Network.
4:30pm - 5:15pm: Trinity Western University's Dr Kevin Schut presents:
Playing with Power? A discussion about Christian parents dealing with video games.
Description: “Video games are a major cultural force today, present in the living room, in the office and on phones everywhere. How do we respond to them as families and followers of Christ? In this session, Kevin Schut, professor of Media + Communication at TWU and author of the book Of Games & God: A Christian Exploration of Video Games talks about some of the controversial issues surrounding games and considers what a Biblically-informed approach to games looks like. The presentation will be part talk, part demo of games, part conversation and entirely balanced in approach, as Dr. Schut argues that games, like all things, have their strengths and weaknesses.”
Bio: Dr. Kevin Schut studies video games and teaches about media at Trinity Western University. He wrote “Of Games & God: A Christian Exploration of Video Games,” which is a conversation starter for the church about how to deal with this powerful cultural force. In his few minutes of spare time, he likes to play King’s Quest and Pikmin 3 with his three school-aged daughters, and he plays Hearthstone late at night when he should be going to bed. 5:30pm - 6:15pm: DL Support Teacher, Sarah-Beth Gould, presents:
Parent-Teacher Relationship: Burden, Game, or Something More?
Description: "The parent-teacher relationship can make or break a family’s home education experience. In this session I will share experiences as well as some survey results on this topic. While we don’t want to ‘carbon copy’ this relationship, there are over-arching values and common understandings that we can all hold to help this relationship not be a burden or a game, but rather something more."
Bio: Sarah-Beth Gould and her boys have been homeschooling together for the last eleven years. Five years have been outside of the ‘DL world’ and six within. She has been a Support Teacher with HCOS since 2010 and is still amazed that she can support and encourage other homeschool moms as a career!
6:30pm - 7:15pm: Direct Action Career & Educational Consultant, Walter Loewen, presents:
“Hope and Help for the Dyslexic”
Description: A workshop for all struggling students: Warning signs of dyslexia. Dyslexia’s effect on learning. Why seemingly smart children struggle. Strategies that work with dyslexics and all children who struggle. What you can do. In his presentation, he’ll be discussing the character of dyslexics, brain dominance, problems dyslexics face, and providing tools to overcome those issues. AN EXCELLENT RESOURCE FOR PARENTS & TEACHERS.
Bio:When Loewen took early retirement from the school district after it phased out its gifted student program, he started a consulting firm for gifted students. But not long in, requests for help from parents with dyslexics struggling in the mainstream school system started pouring in. When his own grandchildren were diagnosed with dyslexia, his eyes began to open. firstname.lastname@example.org
7:30pm - 9pm: Grad Round Table Discussion
"To Dogwood or Not"
Join seasoned home learning moms as they share their journey through the Grad years. Janine Willemsen, Carmen Tischer and Vasso Rowbottom will talk about the different paths each of their kids took (some Dogwood and some not), the opportunities to look out for and what inspired them.
Afterwards, several DL will be on hand to ask Graduation Specific Questions. They will have material on hand and share what they offer that may interest your kids as they choose their highschool path.
